What 'low competition' actually means
A low-competition niche has three properties at once: real, dollar-validated demand; a small number of stores serving it well; and no dominant brand or Amazon listing already owning the category.
Lose any one of those three and it is not low competition, it is either no market or no opportunity.
The 5 signals of a genuinely low-competition niche
- Meta Ad Library shows fewer than 10 active advertisers running creative for the core product, but the ones who do have ads running 30+ days.
- Google search results for the main term are mostly Reddit threads, niche blogs, and small Shopify stores, not Amazon and big-box retailers.
- TikTok native search returns 50K to 500K view videos with comments asking 'where can I buy this?'.
- Amazon top-listings have 4-figure review counts in the parent category, but no clear bestseller for your specific sub-niche.
- Keyword tools show meaningful monthly volume (300+) but low keyword difficulty (under 30).
Two signals is interesting, three is worth validating, four or more is a real opportunity.
The repeatable method
This is the workflow we use. It takes about 90 minutes per candidate niche and weeds out 80% of bad ideas before you spend a dollar.
- Start from a watershed (pet health, home office, sleep, hobbies, senior tech, functional drinkware).
- Drill two levels deeper using TikTok and Reddit native search. Note the exact phrases customers use.
- Run those phrases through the Meta Ad Library and Amazon. Count active advertisers and check review concentration.
- Cross-check search volume and difficulty in a keyword tool. Anything over KDI 40 is not low competition.
- Score the niche against the 5 signals above. Three or more = build a product shortlist.
8 underserved niche pockets in 2026
These are starting points, not guaranteed wins. Each one passes the 5-signal test as of writing. Validate again before you commit.
- Calming gear for newly adopted rescue dogs (separate from the broader 'anxious dog' niche).
- Quiet exercise gear for upstairs apartments (treadmills, jump alternatives, low-noise weights).
- Adaptive kitchen tools for arthritis sufferers in their 50s and 60s.
- Fountain-pen accessories for the journaling revival.
- Pottery wheel and clay starter kits for at-home hobbyists.
- Posture and grip aids for guitarists and pianists.
- Travel-friendly recovery tools for marathon runners over 40.
- Functional bottles and shakers for the high-protein diet trend.
Three traps that look low-competition but are not
- No competition because no demand. If you cannot find advertisers, content, or threads, the niche has no buyers, not low competition.
- No competition yet because the season is wrong. A Christmas-only product looks empty in February and packed in October.
- No competition because a giant brand already owns it. Search and you will find an Amazon bestseller with 20,000 reviews. That is competition, just not on Shopify.
From niche to first test
Once you have one or two low-competition niches that pass the 5-signal test, find products that solve the sharpest pain in the niche, demo well on video, and have a 3x markup. Run them through a winning-product checklist before you build the store. For the full framework on how niches fit into a dropshipping business, see the dropshipping niches pillar guide.
